Founded in 2006, SAFIRE (Service d’Accompagnement, de Formation, d’Insertion et de Réhabilitation de l’Enfant) is an established NGO that helps children and young people who live partly on the streets or have limited access to education and leisure opportunities. Many of them are school dropouts with little family support and few prospects for the future. Through guidance, education, and social reintegration, SAFIRE empowers these youngsters to regain confidence and build a brighter path forward.

From October 13 till October 22, an implementation training took place in the SAFIRE office in Verdun to prepare the SAFIRE street educators for the use of the mobile school and its 280+ educational panels. Over several days, the team explored how to bring interactive learning, play, and connection to the streets.
The first sessions were met with great enthusiasm from both the educators and the children in the field. In different communities in the south, north and east of the island, over 40 children gathered around the new mobile school, eager to learn, play, and interact. These activities will complement SAFIRE’s ongoing outreach and reintegration programmes, offering street-connected youth a safe and engaging space to grow their skills and confidence.

With its tropical setting in the heart of the Indian Ocean, Mauritius is often known for its paradise beaches — but like in many places, there are young people facing difficult realities. With the help of the new mobile school, SAFIRE aims to make a tangible difference by bringing learning opportunities directly to the streets and creating safe spaces for children and young people growing up in vulnerable contexts.

We’re super proud to welcome SAFIRE to the StreetSmart family and can’t wait to see how this new mobile school will continue to empower children and youth across Mauritius!
